Lately I’ve been loving the pattern on pattern designs that are popping up everywhere. History repeats itself and this is a look that’s re-emerged with a fresh face and new attitude.
For the first time, asking, “does the carpet match the drapes?” is absolutely appropriate. And why stop there? Match the carpet to the drapes, the sofa, and the lamp shades. At a time when we are all spending a lot of time at home, staring at our own boring greige walls, and neutral furniture, I find bold bright patterns a wonderful escape. When done well it is unforgettable.
Couple of tips for applying this look in your own home:
- Play with scale: Mix tiny patterns with larger ones so they are not competing with each other. For example, use a larger print on drapes and a condensed print for wall paper or a sofa. Make what you want featured yell ‘I’m here!! Look at me!!’ with a larger scale pattern.
- Be Bold: Don’t shy away from loud colors, but edit your palette. Try to stick to 3-4 colors per space and be conscious of how those colors work together. Check out this quickie crash course for complimentary color pointers. And don’t forget: monochromatic can also be very chic when done well.
- Be fearless: Don’t be afraid to mix different patterns, but try and stick to 3-4 per room. They don’t have to match, but should speak a similar language. Organic, relaxed, curvilinear patterns work well with each other and same goes for structured, rectangular, architectural patterns.
